This week we welcomed a new member into our family. A kitten named Rafa, inspired by his love of sitting in front of the tv watching tennis!

Most of the day, Rafa can be found wrestling with our Yorkie, Ollie, climbing furniture, chasing his toys across the floor, or exploring all the corners of our house. Whatever he's doing, he's completely committed to it.

Until he is done. Then without hesitation, he jumps onto the highest perch he can find, curls into a tiny ball, and falls into the deepest sleep imaginable. Before long, you hear the gentle sound of his purring filling the room.

There isn't any guilt and he doesn't wander around looking for one more thing to accomplish before he rests. He simply knows it's time.

Watching Rafa this week has gotten me thinking about how differently many of us approach rest. He reminds me that life isn't meant to be lived at one speed. There are moments to play wholeheartedly, moments to explore with curiosity, and moments to simply be still.

And perhaps all of them matter equally.

LESSONS FROM THE WILD

Cats are masters of living in rhythm.

While they have a reputation for sleeping all day, what they're actually doing is following the natural cycles their bodies were designed for. They move between periods of intense focus and deep recovery with remarkable ease. Kittens may sleep up to 20 hours a day, not because they're lazy, but because rest is essential for growth, learning, healing, and restoring energy.

When cats are awake, they're fully present. They play with enthusiasm, explore with curiosity, and remain incredibly alert to the world around them. When it's time to rest, they do that just as completely.

Scientists have also discovered that a cat's purr may do more than express contentment. The low-frequency vibrations produced while purring are thought to promote healing, reduce stress, and help restore the body. Even humans often find the sound calming, as if our nervous systems instinctively recognize the value of slowing down.

Perhaps that's a Cat's greatest lesson. Cats don't earn their rest, they claim it. Rest is simply part of being alive. As humans, it's easy to forget that.

We often measure our worth by how much we accomplish, but productivity is not our only state of value. The natural world tells a different story. Every living thing moves through cycles of activity and renewal.

Stillness sharpens instinct and the pauses restore clarity.

The Cat reminds us that we're allowed to step back, curl inward, and replenish without apology. Rest isn't the opposite of living fully, it's part of what makes living fully possible.
