Do you ever get to the end of a busy day and wonder what you actually accomplished? For me it can look like, answering messages, making progress on a few projects, handling the unexpected, starting a few new things, and remembering several more. I was moving all day, but the thing that mattered most somehow never got my full attention.
There are plenty of things I want to give my energy to. And that’s part of the challenge: it all matters to me. Choosing a priority means accepting that something else will have to wait, even when I’m excited about it or someone is waiting for an answer.
This week, Falcon has me thinking about where my attention is going. When I feel pulled in several directions, my instinct is often to work faster or squeeze one more thing into the day. But I’m learning to pause long enough to ask: What actually needs my energy right now?
To be honest, I usually already know the answer. The trick is just slowing down enough to focus my attention on the project I keep putting off because it needs uninterrupted thought. Or the conversation I need to be fully present for. Or the rest I keep moving to the bottom of the list.
I’m practicing channeling my inner falcon and choosing one thing to focus on at a time. The rest of the list will still be there. For a little while, it can wait.

LESSONS FROM THE WILD

Falcons pursue their prey (primarily birds) in flight with an intense focus. Its target can turn, drop, or accelerate, and a successful pursuit requires the falcon to track that movement and adjust its own course.
The peregrine falcon offers a striking example. It often hunts birds in the air, sometimes descending from above in a steep dive called a stoop. Its hunting depends on responding to the circumstances in front of it, bringing movement and attention together as it closes the distance.
When it comes to our own lives, some days, we sit down knowing exactly what we need to do. Then a message comes in, someone needs help, and a quick task turns into an hour. By the time we return to what we planned, half the day is gone. We’ve been busy, but the work we most wanted to accomplish is still waiting.
Think about a falcon pursuing a bird in flight. Its target is moving, and the falcon has to follow those movements and adjust its course. Speed alone won’t get it there. It needs to keep track of the bird it’s pursuing. That combination of attention and action offers a practical reminder for days when we’re being pulled in every direction. Like the falcon keeping its target in view, we need a clear sense of what we’re working toward.
That starts with deciding what deserves our attention. Maybe there’s a deadline approaching, a decision holding up a project, or a conversation we keep postponing. Sometimes we already know what needs to come first, but we keep answering smaller requests because they’re easier to handle. Naming the priority helps us recognize when we’re being pulled away from it.
Falcon’s reminder is to give our energy a direction. Close the inbox for a while, let a new idea wait in a notebook, or tell someone when you’ll be available. Then stay with the thing you chose long enough to move it forward. There will still be other demands when you’re done, but you’ll have given one important thing the attention it needed.
